I don’t have a 4x4 Vehicle. Can I still come on an expedition?
Yes of course, as a “hop in”, of course only while space are available.
What is a “hop in”?
“Hop in” is a participant who does not have a vehicle but wishes to come on our expedition. Although “hop ins” will be a passenger in our official vehicles, “hop ins” should be prepared to drive where the situation arises.
Do I need an international driving license?
If you intend to drive then, YES, you will need an international driving licence but also please bring with you, your own country’s full driving license.
I have no experience in 4x4 vehicle driving. Is it still possible for me to drive?
Usually YES, we will allow to try driving our 4x4 vehicle on a highway first, then progress to minor roads, then to winding roads to see how well you can handle the vehicle. If we find that your skill level is adequate, then we will upgrade you to a full fledge driver.
As a hop in would it be possible to move around to different vehicles?
Yes, you will be encouraged to move between vehicles to know fellow expedition members better but need to ask permission from the owner/ driver of your existing vehicle and the vehicle you intend to move to.
I am a smoker. As a “hop in” can I smoke inside the vehicles?
As a smoker, we will allocate you into a smoking vehicle.
I have a 4x4 Vehicle. How do I know if it is suitable?
Just send us a photograph of your 4x4 vehicle, and a list of what modifications have been done on it and we will comment whether it is suitable or any more modifications required.
If I want to ship my vehicle to the start of your expedition, what do I need to do and can 4x4 World Explorer help?
First, gather all the appropriate vehicle related documents: (See more details under “Need to Know” – “Shipping & Logistics”)
Vehicle Registration Document,
Local Insurance of the vehicle.
FIA AIT Carnet de Passage en Douane.

We will assist with clearing your vehicle into the country, vehicle entry permits, port authorities, customs, local transport authorities, third party insurance, bonded temporary storage, temporary driving permits, and other relevant documents.
If I bring my own vehicle how much am I expected to pay in shipment and ground cost?
It depends from the Port that we need to ship to. All the costs will be shown in your entry fees form for that particular expedition is necessary.
What is the latest that I could start the paperwork process from the sailing/departure time?
The application of Carnet depending on AA office, normally will take one full working week and the shipping / customs procedures will need one week prior to export/import the vehicle at respective Ports/CIQ. Please see our “Shipping & Logistics” section in “Need to Know” tab above.
I Do I have to load the vehicles in the shipping containers myself?
In general the respective logistics company will handle the loading (stuffing), lashing, choking and packing of the vehicles inside the containers. Packing charges will be imposed for this services. Please see our “Shipping & Logistics” section in “Need to Know” tab above.
Who will pick up my vehicle from the Port of Arrival?
We will clear and send your vehicle to the starting hotel. You arrive at the hotel and we hand over your vehicle with your keys and our adventure begins!
If I bring my own vehicle and it breaks down during the expedition what will happen to the convoy and my vehicle?
Our on tour mechanic will try his best to get your vehicle going to the next major city to have it repaired. If that fails then the convoy will carry on with the expedition and our Sweeper (See “Glossary”) will tow your vehicle to the next major town for repairs or if this is not possible then we will leave your vehicle, you and our Sweeper to solve the problem – do not worry we will not abandon you! Once the problem is solved, you will have to rejoin at a forward overnight stop. Usually the ways to do this is taking a short cut, if there is one, or drive longer hours to catch up.
Is there a mechanic on tour with us?
Yes, we always have an expedition experienced fully qualified mechanic with us. See “The Team” – “Officials” for more details.
Do I need to bring any spare parts with me?
Yes, you will need to. Please look at “Need to know”, sub-section “Equipment” , sub-sub-section “Vehicle” for details.
What if I am in a country where I need a part for my vehicle and they don’t have it?
Our on tour mechanic will try his best to modify a similar part to get your vehicle to the next major town to source for the spare part. If that fails, then, we will have to have the part couriered into the country from wherever the closest source is.
How many hours do I need to expect to be on the road for?
On a normal day, barring unforeseen circumstances, about 6 – 10 hours, including touring, visiting highlights, rest breaks for food and conveniences.
